    Golden Temple

The monastery Hiranya Varna Mahavihar is located in the royal city of Patan, in Kathmandu. It is widely known as the Golden Temple because of the gilded metal plates covering most of it’s frontage. The monastery has no regular priest. Based on a practice of Newari Buddhism, every month the members of a different family from the area take responsibility of the temple’s rituals and other needs. Three members of the family, a boy below the age of 15, a man above the age of 15, and a woman above the age of 30 stay inside the monastery during the whole month. The boy has more of the responsibilities.

In April 2013, the 9 year old monk-priest of that period was followed and given a camera to make photographs of the temple during the last week of his monkshood.
